Town #16: Wethersfield

Wethersfield was settled in 1634. The only town that is older is Windsor, settled in 1633. Wethersfield has the title of oldest settlement because the town of Windsor was initially mostly a trading post. But still, there were people there and as far as the state of Connecticut is concerned Windsor is the oldest town.

As an outsider, I find the "controversy" very intriguing. Wethersfield missed being the oldest by a few months. However, the town still likes to claim the title anyway (as you will notice from the sign if you click on it.)

The onion that is at the top of the sign is the crop that was widely produced and traded throughout the town's history.

I first visited Wethersfield when I started working in this town. I noticed there is a big difference in the town proper and the original section named Old Wethersfield. The main part of town is centered on the Silas Deane Highway and has modern shops all along the way. Old Wethersfield has a much more Colonial feel, is slower, quieter and has many house museums.

What it's known for: Old Wethersfield

Wethersfield stats:
Population: 26,220
Size: 13 square miles
Villages/Other Communities: Griswoldville, Old Wethersfield
Historic Sites: Buttolph-Williams House, Joseph Webb House, Roger Butler House, Silas Deane House, Old Wethersfield
